Cameroon's Prime Minister, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute has announced that works will continue to give Bamenda a befitting stadium.
The Prime Minister, speaking in Bamenda Wednesday 6th October 2021, saluted the dynamic people of the North West whose youth have been excelling in the game of football
"In the days ahead, our darling team will be playing the cup of Cameroon final. The construction of the Bamenda Municipal Stadium will continue. You can charge this on me" PM Dion Ngute told the population.
The Bamenda Municipal stadium was destroyed in April 2016 by then FECAFOOT President, Tombi A Roko Sidiki. He aimed to give Bamenda a befitting stadium in six months.
Five years after, the stadium is still to see the light of day with professional league matches now played at the Yong Sports AcademyStadium at Mile six Nkwen.
Sources say there is a court injunction at the special criminal court in Yaounde for bitting construction works to continue.
With the announcement from Prime Minister Dion Ngute, there is hope that the injunction will be suppressed and works continue.
Talking shortly after the announcement, Mbigha Njah Felix, President of FECAFOOT North West is a happy man.
"I am very happy about this announcement. Finally, we will get the field complete and our teams will not be relegated in Elite 2 now and then"
"I have clamored for years now that a bailiff should take stock of what is there for construction works to continue. My fervent wish is for the works to start pretty soon." Mbigha Felix said.
The dressing room has already been constructed pending completion. This building houses a media Centre and restaurants. The seats are all on the site and if engaged, the project can take less than three months to be completed.
The North West region has five teams in the Elite division without a playground. YOSA and PWD in Elite 1 for the men and Vision Sports for Elite One for the girls. ITA Mbong FC and Rangers FC of Bafut in the women and men Elite Two respectively.
The region through PWD of Bamenda won the League last year and is the finalist of the Cup of Cameroon this year. Unfortunately, nowhere to play football.
As the caravan to preach peace stands in the region, football lovers can only hope that the works start as soon as possible before the new football season is launched
