Some youths in Bamenda, North West region of Cameroon have strengthened their leadership and entrepreneurial skills. This follows a two-day Youth summit organized at the Franco Alliance Hall, Veterinary junction on the theme “A New Breed, The Next Generation” during which the role of youths in building society to enhance development was also highlighted.
The youth summit that brought together over 60 participants was aimed at inspiring the youths and guiding them to use and build their potential in all aspects of life to develop their societies among others.
In an interview with safeguard.info, the Vision bearer, Pastor Ndifon Peterson Kimbu says, “The vision we have for the youths is to inspire young persons to believe in themselves and to empower them in different aspects of leadership which is politics, education, spiritual and cultural sociology and to help them become peace agents".
He adds that bringing together youth leaders of youth-led organizations made them buy this vision and saw the need to take youths of all paths of life to teach and make them impact change. He disclosed that they will be working closely with these youths to see that they attain their dreams by encouraging them with guidance, funds, guiding them to do correct politics that is aimed at building and not destroying society, and equally “capital with low interest” amongst others.
According to one of the facilitators, Smith Cosmos in his topic “On The Next Generation Leadership”, changing the systems of the values that govern us is what will bring a change in society. He notes that the focus is basically to change the status quo but we are not changing the principles that govern us, so even if the youths of today are in positional leadership tomorrow, things would not change if they do not change the systems that are functioning.
Attesting to the impact the Youth Summit has created, Anye Clement, a participant and a youth leader from the Presbyterian church says he has learned a lot.
” I’ve learned a lot spiritually, entrepreneur-wise, academically, financially..... “
He adds that finding your purpose will enable you to achieve these things. As a leader in different aspects, he intends to use the knowledge gathered from this seminar to develop society by helping youths find their purpose and to help in peacebuilding.
Present at the Youth summit was the representative of the Bamenda City Mayor, Mekom Samuel who urged the youths to be steadfast and make use of the services rendered to them by the city council.
“The city council is here to support these youths in whatsoever initiative they want to take to make sure they accomplish their tasks with no disturbance be it to support them administratively. Any youth who have any entrepreneurial skills they want to achieve given that they give a clear cut of all they want to use to attain their objectives”.
The youth summit is one of a kind saw that these youths engage in some practical workshops that helped them identify some solutions to pending problems in the society and nation at large.
