University of Bamenda: Kum Nji, first Visually Impaired to successfully defend MSc Thesis

Kum Nji Desmond, a student with visual impairment at The University of Bamenda has become the first visually impaired student of the University to successfully defend a Masters thesis.

After obtaining his First degree in English Private Law, Kum Nji Desmond immediately enrolled in a Masters program in Law. Two years after his enrollment, he presented a Masters thesis on the topic "Crime of the Aggression and the Independence of the Prosecutor under the Rome Statute".

"The topic is a course for concern because it is an issue that is ongoing and is hampering international peace and security", Kum Nji Desmond said as to his choice of topic.

After cross-examination of the student, the panel of the jury accepted his work and awarded him a score of 80 which brings him within the domain of Excellent.

Being visually impaired from birth, Kum Nji Desmond faced some challenges while studying at The University of Bamenda.

"I had difficulties as far as physical access is concerned, talking about the infrastructure in UBa. Consistent power failure amongst others", he said.

Despite the difficulties faced, Kum Nji Desmond says he is motivated to proceed with the Ph.D. as it is his dream to be at the pinnacle of academics where he finds pleasure to dish out what he knows to other persons.


To his peers, Kum Nji Desmond says they should have that positive mindset, assertiveness, and come out of hideouts and embrace education because it is only through education that they can have a voice in society.

"Education is the at the powerful weapon to change the world. It's just a big shout out to all who are yet to join the train in the educational sector to be educated because there's wealth in Literacy", Kum Nji Desmond noted.

Having enrolled at The University of Bamenda in the 2016/2017 academic year, Kum Nji Desmond was born on January 1st, 1998. He is a native of Menchum Division, North West region of Cameroon.

He was the best Graduating Bachelor Degree student with Second Class Honors (Upper Division) in the department of English Private Law, Faculty of Law, and Political Science in 2019.

He is the President of the Association of Students with Disabilities at The University of Bamenda.
